Over the years I’ve met some wonderful people doing this job and I’d like to make a few recommendations.
Ostaria Posta is probably the best hotel I’ve ever stayed in, and I’ve stayed in a lot! This family run operation at the heart of the Dolomites is perfectly located for cycling, skiing and hiking. Paolo will give you the most amazing routes, whatever your activity, and his son Philipp, a somellier, will advise the very best wines to compliment the truly wonderful food prepared by the rest of the family. Once you have experienced Posta you will definitely return. Check out their website at www.ostariaposta.com
Serre Des Ormes is a cycling/hiking bed and breakfast in the glorious Meouge Valley, just 40 kms from Mont Ventoux. Kate and Paul will give you as much or as little attention as you require. They will send you off on a route, or accompany you, and then treat you to a glorious home cooked feast at the end of your day.
Pav Bryan is a cycling coach who’s helped a lot of riders achieve their goals. Whatever your level, if you need help deciding what’s best for you then I can wholeheartedly recommend Pav.
Marco Mori runs Gusto Cycling. His Sheffield based organisation does a similar thing for the retro L’Eroica event to what I do for Maratona. Whether you’re interested in Eroica Britannia or the original Tuscan event then Marco is the man to speak to.
If you’re looking for a UK sportive then this is the place to look
Just wanted to say a massive thank you – for the Maratona entry & all your amazing organising. I loved the day despite the weather! Hope I will be back again soon.
Hope you have a safe trip back.
Hi Ian, just wanted to say a huge thank you to you the event organisers and all the great people I had the pleasure of meeting this last few days. Words can’t describe how breathtaking it all is, and I’m so very grateful to have been given the opportunity. Look forward to riding again sometime, hope all goes well for all your future ventures and hopefully we’ll meet at Maratona again.
Just wanted to thank you for our entry to such a wonderful event. I will definitely look to return next year and possibly even before then, as the area is just so stunning for cycling.
Thanks for all your brilliant organising as ever – definitely the best year ever!
Can you put Russ and me down for next year please as we can’t wait to come back! Xx
I just wanted to say a massive thank you for organising everything.
It was an incredible experience, and you did a great job in getting everyone ready for the big day!
All the best!
Very briefly I wanted to thank you so much for your magnificent organisational skills. It was a great event and I shall never forget the day.
I hope to do it again in the future too. Many thanks,
Thanks for the photos! Hope you’ve had a good time travelling.
Just to say a huge thanks for all the work and organisation you’ve done to get us into such a great event. We both had a fantastic time. So much so, in fact, we’re very keen indeed to give it a go again next year and be part of Maratona 32!
If you’d be prepared to add us to the list we’ll definitely be there. Rather optimistically we’ve actually got accommodation sorted already!
All the very best for the summer
As always, a huge thank you from Ola and I for your superb organisation, emails, paperwork etc. We feel like South Tyrol is our home now, and already are keen to return to the Maratona next year. I think the only way now to go faster with full time work etc is to get out beforehand so we will be training there in May too – now made friends in La Villa and at our base at Camping Sass Dlacia!!!
When it is time, please put us down for two spots as before. I hope you had a great time in the Dolomites too? We got back last Friday, having cycled or hiked every day! We also went over to do the Umbrial and Gavia passes too, sleeping at over 2800m.
Thanks again, especially for introducing us to the most beautiful area on Earth:)
Just a quick note to say many thanks for all your efforts in organizing this years event and providing all the information required for a first timer. We arrived late on the Saturday so could not meet you in person on Saturday morning to thank you face to face. I think you came past (if you were wearing yellow jersey) at the start on sunday on the first climb but I was stuck in the middle (unless there was another Ian Parr!).
I really enjoyed the whole event and experience even the Giau to a certain extent !
Thanks again and look forward to hopefully doing it again in the future.
Best regards and hope you have a good summer of riding.
Ian, I just wanted so a big thank-you for letting me being a part of the team. The Maratona is a very special event, and the amount of time and effort you put into getting us all there was truly amazing. Enjoy your time away and I very much hope to see you at the 2018 edition.
Thank you very much for everything and perfect organisation
I don’t know how you do it!
I would love to come again next year so let me know when I will
Have to put in my entry
Hope to see you next year
Thank you for organising the Maratona dles dolomites. I hope you had a very enjoyable ride. It really is a beautiful and well organised event, the best I’ve been too.
Unfortunately, I left the region with unfinished business as I snapped a spoke on the descent from the Passo Gardena. Luckily I stayed upright and held it together from the wobble at considerable pace. Unfortunately it was unfixable and the wheel was so out of true that it didn’t move. As the realism dawned that my ride was over, it is fair to say I had a bit of toddler tantrum followed by a few tears sat on a bench as I watch others speeding down the mountain. This was followed by long trek down the Gardena, bike on my shoulder in uncomfortable cleats. A mechanic did come to my rescue, swapped my wheel out so I could roll back to Corvara. My hopes of then doing the 106KM route were dashed as I realised I missed cut off. To add insult to injury, Sir Wiggins refused a selfie which I was hoping to send to the group titled “every cloud”.
Despite my woes, I have to remember that it’s not my livelihood at stake; I can’t imagine the disappointment athletes feel when missing a World cup, Olympics or miss any kind selection due to injury or mechanics. In fact the trip was highly successful, the remainder of the team had a great time, the region is beautiful and food was amazing.
I can only hope you are running the event from cycling weekly again next year as I for one will be signing up to make things right. I know for a fact that Velosport CC are particularly interested in doing the event again. So that leads me to ask, when will you be restarting the process and please could you keep me informed.
In the meantime, I would like to thank you for making the ride possible on behalf of myself and the Velosport team. It has created a lot of memories and only increased the Amur for cycling.
I just wanted to say thanks for organising one of the best weeks of my cycling life to date. The Dolomites are amazing.
